VITAL-5G Romanian Trial Sets a New Benchmark in Assisted Navigation and IoT Integration at Galati Port

23 apr. 2024

The VITAL-5G project proudly announces the successful completion of its groundbreaking trial at the Galati port, demonstrating enhanced capabilities and innovation in the use of 5G technology for navigation and IoT applications. This trial marks a significant advancement in data-enabled technologies within the largest Danube River port and the second-largest in Romania.

Utilizing the latest 3GPP Rel. 16 with 5G Standalone (SA) architecture, the trial was conducted on a series of ships owned by CNFR NAVROM, a leading Romanian river transport company. The testbed implemented cutting-edge network programmability to deploy end-to-end slicing tailored to specific service requirements, including enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC).

5G SA deployment and experimentation in Galati

"The implementation of IoT sensing systems and video cameras on both port infrastructure and vessels transforms traditional navigation systems into intelligent hubs of data-driven operation," said the project coordinator. "This is a game-changer for maritime logistics, offering unprecedented levels of efficiency and safety."

During the trial, a dedicated 5G multi-slice outdoor router collected and transmitted data across network slices, ensuring optimal connectivity and responsiveness. Key performance indicators (KPIs) achieved include a network throughput of 1Gbps and a remarkable one-way end-to-end delay of less than 5ms, showcasing significant improvements over previous network generations.

The VITAL-5G centralized platform enabled seamless interaction among onboarding processes, experiments, and service monitoring, effectively connecting with the 5G testbed for comprehensive service and slice orchestration. This integration demonstrates the trial’s success in automating deployment and dynamically managing network slices to prioritize traffic and monitor services.

"The results confirm that our advanced 5G testbed not only meets but exceeds the critical requirements of modern network applications, offering new business opportunities and a robust platform for future innovation," added the lead engineer.

As part of the Rhine-Danube Trans-European Transport Network Corridor, the enhancements at Galati port position it as a strategic hub in advancing the capabilities of 5G technologies, setting a benchmark for future developments in the sector.
